Scenes from our week/weekend

As summer's end approaches, our weeks seem to be flying by. Adelina isn't crawling yet, but seems ever so close! Every time she gets up on all fours (like 1000 times a day) we think, okay this is gonna be it! I'm not in a hurry to have the complications of two mobile children, but at the same time I'm anxious for her to crawl because I can tell how badly she wants to.

Here's Oscar trying to encourage her...

This book from Aunt Peggy has been getting lots of smiles and scoots

A little video of her attempts at mobility from today

Adelina continues to enjoy her introduction into solid food. We were planning on slowly adding one meal a month until she eats three meals and two snacks a day, all while breastfeeding on demand. But our schedule has not been met with approval! Adelina wants to eat while we are eating and has been getting VERY upset if we don't have something for her at meal time. So over the past couple days, she's been having two small meals a day and seems quite happy about it. Tonight at dinner, she ate more than I could have ever imagined: 2 cubes of summer squash, 2 cubes of peaches, and 1 cube of pears. Every time she finished a cube, she started reaching for her bowl and crying like she wanted more. After the 5th cube, I decided that she'd had enough....I'm not sure where she put all of the food, especially since she nursed right before dinner! I guess she's a growing girl :)

Here's a video of Caleb being a good big brother and feeding Adelina

Yesterday Tropical storm Danny hung around all day, so we spent most of the day inside playing. Caleb tried his hand at photography and got this shot of Adelina.

Some giggles and screams...

Caleb getting spoiled with a little breakfast and Sesame Street. This was actually the first time he'd ever eaten in front of the TV. He was a total couch potato! Yesterday Caleb was treated with a visit from our plumber Terry (who actually came to see Oscar and Samosa). Caleb is very interested in how things work these days and Terry took Caleb into the basement and gave him a lesson on plumbing. Caleb thought it was pretty neat!

We had a nice, cool morning at the park today. Both kids enjoyed the swings, and Caleb even let Adelina share his swing for a while.

Love this video, Caleb asks Adelina if she's okay back there. How thoughtful and considerate of him!

Super Bum Drop

Jumping on our bed has become part of Caleb and Randy's nightly routine. Evident;y Caleb's new favorite thing is to rough-house with Randy and jump on top of him. Out of their play has come the new term "super bum drop". Here they are demonstrating...

One on One

The kids got a lot of individual attention today, something that doesn't happen too often. This morning Adelina and I took a nice walk and hung around the house while Randy and Caleb got a haircut and cut the grass. This afternoon, Randy and Adelina had some father-daughter time while Caleb and I had a lunch date. It was a really special day for all of us.

Doesn't Caleb look all grown up with his new haircut?!?

Almost Crawling

Adelina is so close to crawling! I think once she figures out the mechanics of it, she'll be gone! I've been trying to document her this week as she scoots, rocks, and moves.

This video is funny b/c of Oscar coming in at the end and ruining it!

Lots of kicks and backwards scooting

Last one!

This picture reminded me of one I had taken of Caleb from around the same age. Still Calebina...what do you think (I say not really)?

Caleb's New Naptime Routine

For the past two weeks, Caleb has pretty much given up the nap. He will stay in his room for an hour or so for "quiet time", usually talking and cuddling with his stuffed animals or reading books. This week I caught him walking around his bed and chatting up a storm about who knows what. He says that he was talking about "skates" but I have no idea what that means. You can hear him say (among other things) the following: Grammy has one, suitcase has one, church has one, steeple has one....

Drama at the Barnes house

The night of August 6, someone broke into our cars and stole some spare change and my iPod. I saw someone walking up our street minutes after we discovered that our cars had been broken into, so when I called the cops to report the theft, I also described the guy....turns out he was the thief and the cops ended up catching him. Here's the link to the story in the local paper....very Cops!

6 month stats

Adelina had her 6 month appointment today and did great! She cried a little when she got the shots, but quickly recovered and was smiling at the receptionist on the way out of the office. She's now a whopping 15 lbs 13 oz (50th percentile), 26.75 inches long (80th percentile), and has a head circumference of 16.5 inches (30th percentile, I'm a little suspicious of this number b/c Adelina wouldn't hold still). Her development is right on track and everyone is the office is impressed with her pleasant disposition. One funny thing about today is that Dr. Felman asked me if she was doing any babbling yet (like ma-ma-ma-ma, da-da-da, ba-ba-ba) and I said no, that she was just making lots of different sounds and blowing raspberries. Wouldn't you know that pretty much as soon as we got home she started doing ma-ma-ma and has been doing it all morning!?!?

She's almost crawling, which is really exciting! She spends lots of time up on her hands and knees trying to figure out how to propel herself forward. She often ends up in a push-up position and scooting backwards or around in a circle, both of which are somewhat frustrating to her.

After eating solids for a little over a week, she's really starting to like it. So far, we've given her sweet potatoes, carrots, and yellow squash. She'll happily eat the sweet potatoes and carrots, but when I give her the squash she devours it. I've got some ripe peaches that she'll be getting into this week for sure. Here she is on her 6 month b-day enjoying some sweet potatoes.

Now that Caleb has been a big brother for six months, I think that he's really enjoying the role. He is a constant source of amusement for Adelina and she is making him laugh more and more. Lately the backseat of the car has been a pleasant place to be for the both of them. I think they play a kind of peek-a-boo and will both be totally cracked up. Nice to hear laughter instead of crying! This video was today at lunch time. I think Adelina was kicking her feet, which was evidently hysterical to Caleb.

And in random family news, this is No (named b/c Caleb refused to humor Randy and I in the naming of the squirrel) our resident crazy squirrel and newest member of the family! We first noticed No hanging around our yard, lying on tree branches and in the driveway. This guy has no fear of us and we see him often just sauntering around the yard and in and out of the garage. Right before I snapped this picture, he was lounging on the back porch.

Take Me Out to the Ballgame

Today was a first for Caleb and Adelina...a baseball game! We went to see the Manchester Fishercats play the Altoona Curve in Manchester, NH. The Fishercats are the AA team for the Toronto Bluejays and the Curve are the AA for who else but the Pittsburgh Pirates!!! Would it surprise you that the Curve are the worst team in the league? But the Curve won today, 6-3!! The game was a great time for all. Adelina was fired up and having the time of her life for about the first three innings, then took a nap for the next couple innings, and partied until we left at the 7th inning stretch. Caleb had a big time learning about baseball, cheering for both teams, and snacking on ice cream, peanuts, and cracker jacks. Since Randy and I were big baseball fans growing up, it was really great to be able to take our kids to the ballpark. And unlike Fenway, we were able to get amazing seats....three rows behind homeplate for $12 a piece!

A Fishercat...one of the seemingly endless mascots around the stadium today

Caleb enjoying a little ice cream, while Adelina enjoys a little mother's milk

Caleb and Smokey Bear...Smokey just turned 65 and was handing out autographed baseballs and bracelets.

The underwear thing is still adorable to me!

Adelina's First Taste of Solid Food

After months of eating with us and looking at our food longingly, Adelina got her first taste of solid food this morning. She happily took a couple bites of pureed sweet potatoes, but by the look on her face I think she was quite surprised at the taste and texture of it. We let her play with the bowl and spoon and it seemed that was her favorite part. Bon Appetit, Adelina!

Adelina's Photo Shoot

Last week I took Caleb and Adelina to Babies R Us to get their pictures taken and it was pretty much a disaster. If interested, you can at least look at the thumbnails at http://mystudio.kiddiekandids.com/viewshare.aspx?c=595010351O2T7GLSV and see why I never ordered any of these pictures. I still wanted to get some pictures of Adelina in her "prom dress" (as Randy calls it), so yesterday we did a backyard photo shoot.

Lunch with Caleb

Earlier this week, Caleb was in a mood for entertaining as we were finishing lunch. Here are a couple videos of him.

Ade-ninja!!

Somehow Adelina has a new silly nickname...Adeninja. Randy called her Adeninja over the weekend and it has stuck, even Caleb is calling her that. Our little angel has developed a temper recently and really gets upset if you take a toy away from her or if something is out of reach. I guess this may be a little mean, but this video illustrates her flaring temper.

Today was a hot one, so I fille dup the baby pool for the kids. Caleb never got in, but Adelina had a blast. She spent 45 minutes splashing and playing with the pool toys and the only reason she came out was that it was lunch time.

Day at the Beach

After our bust a couple of weeks ago, we went back to Cranes beach this morning. The skies were a bit overcast and we left much earlier, so we had no trouble getting parking at the beach today. Caleb was of course totally excited to be at the beach and immediately jumped into playing in the sand and flirting with the water. This was Adelina's first trip to the beach, so we weren't sure what her reaction would be...but she LOVED it! I'm sure I'll be finding lots of sand in her diaper this week as it seemed to always be finding its way into her mouth.

Adelina has already outgrown her last swimsuit, so I bought her this cute surfer suit this week.

Randy started to bury Adelina in the sand and she didn't seem to mind. Once Adelina was buried, Caleb had to have a turn too.

The biggest surprise of the day was that Adelina didn't mind the freezing ocean water. We all spent lots of time wading and splashing around. It was a wonderful summer day!
